At just 22, Senior Airman Jean Cook is balancing two callings—serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and studying theater at UCCS.

Her mission: to explore how drama therapy can help veterans heal from post-traumatic stress disorder through storytelling and performance.

As one of four UCCS students awarded the Landis Family Endowed Theatre and Dance Travel Award, Jean traveled to London to interview drama therapists, directors, and veterans using theater to process life after service.

"By coming together to read and put on plays, veterans learn that they are not alone," Jean said.

Her research and service share a common goal—building understanding and connection. With support from UCCS faculty and scholarships, Jean is balancing school, caring for her grandmother, and serving her country, all while pursuing her passion for the arts.

"Having one foot in the arts and the other in the military, I'm able to empathize with people from many different walks of life," she said. This makes me feel like I matter, and like thinking differently is encouraged."

At UCCS, Jean is proving that creativity and service can thrive side by side, showing how Colorado's spirit of acceptance and individuality shines through every performance, every mission, and every act of compassion.
