BoulderAs a kid, Max Knight (Boulder '17) was driven by a desire to “do good and make things better in some way.” This passion led him to found Rooted Robotics (formerly Urban Farms), a robotics company revolutionizing indoor agriculture. Their mission is to make farming more sustainable, efficient, and ethical.
Max recognizes that climate change presents significant challenges for traditional outdoor farming, with droughts and floods making food production increasingly difficult. Vertical farming offers a solution, but profitability remains a challenge. Max is committed to tackling this issue through robotics.
Combining Sustainability and Innovation
Embracing the “only living once” mindset, Max applied his skills from CU Boulder to launch HydroBot, his first company focused on small-scale hydroponic gardening—a soil-free method of growing plants.
Hydroponic systems are especially useful because they are extremely efficient. Although HydroBot’s robotic systems were effective for small setups, Max aimed for a larger impact. He faced the challenge of high labor costs but leveraged his expertise in robotics and agriculture to scale up indoor farming. This led to the creation of Rooted Robotics, a robotic hydroponic solution for large-scale indoor farming.
Max Knight is driving transformative advancements in agriculture. His passion for sustainability and innovation keeps him focused on his goals. To follow Max and Rooted Robotics’ progress, connect with them on LinkedIn.
